Why Cozy Mysteries Are the Perfect Escape
Dear Cozy Lovers,
Cozy mysteries transport us to quaint villages, charming bookshops, warm beaches, and welcoming cafes. In settings like these, our amateur sleuth is dropped into an impossible mystery that he or she must solve.
In a good cozy, we become immersed in a world of quirky characters, endearing pets, charming settings, cryptic clues, and red herrings (false clues/rabbit trails). Hey, it’s not easy to solve a serious crime when you’re busy as a bookstore owner or a pastor’s wife. It takes being clever, resourceful, and persistent.
She is Our Hero!
A cozy is where our minds can safely delve into danger, intrigue, and suspense. There will be complications, obstacles, and twists that our main character never imagined would happen. But she carries on like the hero we want her to be. In the end, we are as proud as punch that she outsmarted the criminal.
Happily, cozy mysteries offer more than just entertainment; they provide us with a comforting escape from the troubles of our everyday lives. And that’s okay. Escaping into a delightful book has been something people have done for centuries. In the pages of a cozy mystery, we can become utterly distracted, losing ourselves for a short time into a world where friendships are cherished, ingenuity pays off, our protagonist is victorious, and the villain always gets their comeuppance.
Making Time to Enjoy a Good Book
One of the difficulties is allowing ourselves the freedom to brush the real world aside so we can relax and enjoy a good book. Before television (and scrolling), people spent their evenings reading and writing. Now, many of us struggle to carve out alone time to appreciate the art of good storytelling in print.
If you are inclined, reply to this article and tell me why you love cozy mysteries. Is it the characters? The clean reading? Do you keep track of the clues and try to pinpoint the villain before the sleuth does? What is it about cozy mysteries that makes you finish one book and look forward to the next?
Staying cozy,
-Penny
